CSC Bunkum #15 2016 - End of season Work Party
20 October 2016

It’s been a lonely lodge the last couple of weeks as the weather has been less than settled.  However Pedro tells me there has been the odd day of great skiing, with snow for Africa up top.  Whakapapa’s last day is next Monday (the 24th), but Turoa is extending its season until Snovember 6.  There’s a small crew booked in for Labour Weekend, but still plenty of room if you’re considering a last minute dash up the hill.

Dallas is already back in Whangamata and Pedro leaves us after the weekend.  Many thanks to our hard working custodians for keeping us well fed, in good humour, and the lodge ticking over for yet another winter.  The good news is that they’ll be back for the 2017 season to do it all again!

So … it’s almost time to put our lodge to ‘rest’ for the summer season.  The end of season work party will take place on Saturday November 12 (and maybe Sunday 13) – it’s a big spring clean and tidy up.  As well as the big clean-up work party participants will be:

  •  removing ALL blankets from the lodge for offsite cleaning
  •  the vacuum cleaner will be taken to Hamilton for servicing
  •  We will need a strong volunteer to bring up a “Rug Doctor” for cleaning the carpets and living room furniture.
  •  We may also tackle a few minor interior maintenance jobs - so if you are handyman/woman your skills could also be utilised.

Once the cleaning and servicing has been done we would like some volunteers to take the blankets and vacuum cleaner back to the lodge, before December 3, when we have an external group booked in.  This is a job for at least 2 people.  If you can help out in this regard please contact Julie on her email address below – she will also be able to give you an indication as to when everything will be available to be returned to the Lodge.

Please sign up with Julie McKenzie (President) - president@skichristie.co.nz.  Remember this will credit your 2017 work party levy. Those that haven’t done a work party, please volunteer!  If we don’t get at least 8 -10 volunteers we won’t be able to run the work party.  Last year we had a great turnout and were mostly finished up by Saturday evening.  See you there!

Don’t forget, you’re also able to use the lodge through summer – with so much to do in the Ruapehu region it’s a great accommodation option - $20 each per night for a minimum of two people – you’ll need to self-cater, sadly the pantry will be closed up until next winter.   Book in the normal way, but ensure you change the Membership Type to “Off Season”:

CSC Bunkum #14 2016 - AGM & Prizegiving, Thursday November 24
20 October 2016

A date for your calendar - the 62nd Christiania AGM and Prizegiving will be held at The McMeekan Centre, Ruakura Research Centre (AgResearch), 10 Bisley Road, Hamilton, on Thursday November 24.  This is the same venue as last year.  The meeting will begin at 6:00pm, you are welcome to arrive from 5:30.  I will send a further email closer to the time containing the meeting Agenda, 2016 Financial Report, President’s Report and other relevant documents.

As per Bunkum #12, we still have vacancies on the club committee.  I have attached our committee nomination form for any interested member.  As per the club constitution these need to returned to the club secretary at least 14 days before the AGM - i.e. by Thursday November 10.  If you’re interested but would like to find out a little more about what’s involved, please contact Julie at president@skichristie.co.nz or Jo at secretary@skichristie.co.nz.

We look forward to seeing you at the AGM.  Any apologies to the club secretary, Jo Studer, secretary@skichristie.co.nz.

CSC Bunkum #12 2016 - It's Spring!
15 September 2016

We’re well into Spring and, though the weather has been a little chequered, there have been some great days.  There’s still a base of over 2m so lots of classic spring skiing left as the weather settles.

A couple of events to remind you of.  Saturday sees the running of the Ngauruhoe Cup.  Teams consist of 5 members, with a minimum of 1 female. The four fastest times count and one must be a female.  The Custodians Race is back by popular demand and the big question of the day is: What will Pedro be wearing?  (People are still talking about his controversial costume from 3 years ago…)  More info on the event is here.  If you’re interested in being part a Christiania team, please contact Bryan Clements at clubcaptain@skichristie.co.nz.  And there’s still lots of space in the lodge for this weekend.

The Christie club races are being run on Saturday September 24.  This is a casual fun day that’s only open to Christie members, not to be confused with the interclub races that are run during the season.  There are shiny trophies up for grabs – get your name on one!  7 bunks still available for the Friday, and 3 for the Saturday.  Any queries on club races, once again please contact Bryan at clubcaptain@skichristie.co.nz

We’re a week away from the school holidays and, although the first week at the lodge is pretty full, the second week has over 20 bunks available for the whole week.  I’m shaking my head in disbelief …

Serious stuff now - Your club needs you.  As some of our long serving and hardworking committee members take a well-deserved break we have a number of vacancies for next year.  It’s not too onerous, we meet in Hamilton once a month, from February through to October.  Interest from outside the Waikato is welcomed – we have a growing membership in Auckland and Tauranga and would love to have representation from those areas.  Attending meetings via Skype or similar means you wouldn’t necessarily need to attend in person.  If you’re interested, or would just like to find out a little more about what’s involved, please contact Julie at president@skichristie.co.nz or Jo at secretary@skichristie.co.nz.  Ask not what your club can do for you …

Enjoy Spring everyone.  We all know where the best place to be on a nice Spring day is

CSC Bunkum #11 2016 - Missing gear, and the future of Whakapapa
2  September  2016

We have unfortunately had some gear go missing from the locker area of the lodge.  Simon Leadley reports that his son Sean’s pair of season rental boots, Atomic Live90, size 26, s/n 1200785755 have gone missing from above locker 14, along with 2 pairs of RAL ski poles that were chained and locked to the front of the same locker.  If anyone has any information about this, please contact Julie at president@skichristie.co.nz

A timely reminder to all members to check that the front door is securely latched when coming and going, particularly with the increased foot traffic past the lodge.

The NZ Herald today published an article on RAL Management and the future of Whakapapa.  That future may include, wait for it … A GONDOLA!  Makes for very interesting reading.

We still have lots of beds left for the rest of the month, at least 5 for every Friday and Saturday through September.

CSC Bunkum #10 2016 - Glorious...

17 August 2016

Glorious is the word to describe Whakapapa at the moment – glorious snow, glorious weather, and finally the Far West T-Bar is up and running.  We’ve just been up for 3 days and they were among the best we’ve had.  The membership is responding, weekends are filling, but there are still bunks to be had – 1 this weekend, 7 next weekend, and plenty of space mid-week.  Time to get cracking folks – you won’t regret it!

The Christiania Derby was unable to run this year due to some very bad weather.  For the first time in living memory, even the Derby party was cancelled as Clubbies were warned not to venture outdoors.  Bad luck for the other clubs but for those snowed in at Christie, fun was had.  And we have the blizzard to thank for the great snow that’s been giving so much delight for the past week.

Men’s Few Days was taken up by 15 or so of the party faithful.  Bob was there with crayfish, we love Bob!  Privacy laws prevent me from revealing too much, but they tell me they’re all coming back next year.

In contrast, Ladies Few Days was a non-starter.  Come on girls, what’s the story?  You missed the best snow of the season!  The challenge is out for next year, it’s time you outdid the boys.

A small booking reminder - please remember that accommodation needs to be booked and paid in advance.  It’s a common scenario, you’ve come up for the day and think “This is so good, I ‘aint goin’ home!”  As long as there’s space the lodge is happy to accept last minute bookings, but please remember to bring the means to access the online booking system.  And don’t forget your login codes.

We’re halfway through August and it seems the season has just begun.  Grab your gear, the family, some friends, and come up for a day, or two, or five.  It’s glorious!

CSC Bunkum #9 2016 - Snow is here!

27 July 2016

After a late start, it looks like winter has finally arrived with a vengeance – there’s lots of new snow and more forecast over the next few days – it’s time to get excited!  There are still heaps of bunks available for this weekend.

The school holidays saw the lodge buzzing and, while the weather wasn’t great, much fun was had.  Long-time members, new members, three generations of Buckleys were there.  There was even a report of that most rare and mysterious of Christie customs, The Undie Run.  Pictures may follow…  And we love the new Rangatira Express!

The Christiania Derby is just around the corner, on Saturday August 6.  There’s a band, there will be a party!  A few bunks are still available for this fun weekend, and we are able to secure accommodation at nearby lodges if required.  If the lodge is showing as full, please email our booking officer, Jenny, directly at bookings@skichristie.co.nz to register your interest.

Following on from Derby are Men’s’ Few Days, August 8 & 9 and Ladies Few Days, August 10 & 11, a great way to enjoy the lodge and mountain without bothersome interruptions from the opposite sex.  A special offer for this year, you can bring friends at member rates for these Few Days!

Housekeeping – as well as your sleeping bag, please remember to bring towels and pillow cases when staying at the lodge.  Matrass protectors are provided, but you may also wish to bring a bottom sheet – it’s optional.

CSC Bunkum #8 2016 - Snow is coming, honest!

2 July 2016

Good news, Pedro and Dallas, our wonderful welcoming Whanagamatan custodians, are in residence.  The lodge is warm, inviting and ready to receive guests.  The new Rangitira Express chairlift is up and running, replacing the Rockgarden and Centennial lifts.  Bottom to top in two and a half minutes!

Not so good news is that winter has overslept and will be in a bit later.  We’re hopeful that enough snow will be in place for the school holidays – watch this space.

We welcome the following new members and look forward to meeting them on the mountain:

  • Amy, Esther and Hazel Williams from Greytown
  • Justine and Jack Brennan from Mt Maunganui
  • Kiri Smeed and Martin, Toby and Francis Ryder from Onetangi, Waiheke Island
  • Todd, Aleisha and Joshua Hulbert from Welcome Bay, Tauranga

There are a couple annual club events coming up in August.  The first is the Christiania Derby on Saturday August 6.  It’s the first interclub event of the season and normally attracts 150 - 200 participants.  It culminates in prizegiving and a knees up at the lodge.  The band is booked!  There are still bunks available for Derby weekend (Fri & Sat) and, even if the lodge is full, we are able to provide accommodation at nearby lodges.

Mens And Ladies Few Days are a chance to enjoy the lodge, and mountain, with friends who share the same bathroom.  Many stories of food, fun, friendship, and even some skiing, abound from previous years’ Few Days.  This year Mens’ Few Days follows on from Derby on Monday, Tuesday August 8 & 9, and Ladies Few Days is Wednesday, Thursday August 10 & 11.  Members can bring a guest at the reduced rate of $65.  Come up and enjoy a memorable stay at Christie.

A few booking guidelines for members:

  • All booking enquiries must go through our Booking Office, Jenny Muir - christiebookings@xtra.co.nz – if Jenny needs direction from the Committee because you are asking for something outside the booking rules, she will then refer to the club President (Julie McKenzie) for a decision.

  •  Please ensure you add all required details when you’re making your booking – the names of all those booked, the ages of junior members, your expected time of arrival at the Lodge.  Please also include any particular dietary requirements for your guests. (This would be Vegetarian or Gluten Free etc, not “I don’t really like Brussel sprouts")  This is important information for the custodians, Party Leader and other members at the lodge.

  • If you are asked by the Booking Officer to update any details, or add any information that has been omitted, please do so promptly.

  • For any members who are considering cancelling school holiday bookings, please consider transferring your booking to a later date rather than a straight cancellation and refund.

There are still a number of unpaid 2016 subscriptions.  If you haven’t received your access details to the booking website, please check that you’ve paid this year’s subs

One of our members, Simon Leadley, is after some used ski gear – Mens boots, size 10 and intermediate to expert level skis.  Please contact Simon on smleadley@gmail.com if you might be able to help him out.

Don’t despair, the white stuff will come!

CSC Bunkum #7 2016 - Membership, Bookings, Facebook and Derby!

18 May 2016

The first snow has fallen, Whakapapa opens in just over 6 weeks, it’s time to get thinking about the 2016 season and all the fun that awaits us!

Membership:  There’s been a lot of membership interest in the last few weeks and I’d like to welcome the following new members to the club:

  • the Cullwick family (Richard, Kahlia, Arlo, Montana and Janette Williams) from Mt Maunganui

  • Joe Ellul from Auckland

  • the Freemantle family (Craig, Sarah, Finn and Nelly) from Hamilton

  • the Tong family (Bradley, Jodie, Kelsie, Reed and Pearce) from Mt Maunganui

  • the Millington family (David, Jaime and Hannah) from Auckland

We look forward to sharing the Christie experience with them.

There is still no joining fee for new members (normally $250 per family) but this may be reinstated as the membership approaches capacity.  If you have friends who are interested in joining, encourage them to act now.

Lodge Bookings:  After an initial flurry of activity, booking traffic has slowed down.  Unusually, there are still bunks available for every night of the season, including school holidays.  The booking restriction period is now over so go for it - book now to avoid disappointment later.

Subscriptions:  A number of subs have still not been paid.  Please remember, you can’t book unless you’re paid up.

Facebook:  I hope you’re aware of the Christiania Facebook page.  We have decided to open it up to members wanting to sell snow equipment, on a trial basis.  Feel free to post any buy, sell or trade information, but please limit to a maximum of 2 posts per item.

The Christie Derby will be run on Saturday August 6.  This is the first interclub event of the season and has been running for almost 60 years.  It’s a fun event, you don’t have to be a ski racer to compete (but it’s good to have a couple up our sleeves!) and there’s no entry fee for Christie members.  The day concludes with Prize giving and a bit of a knees up at the Lodge.   As of today there are still 10 bunks available for Derby weekend and, even if the lodge is full, we are able to provide accommodation at nearby lodges.  If the lodge is showing as full, please email our booking officer, Jenny, directly at bookings@skichristie.co.nz to register your interest.  For new families, we love kids, but Derby weekend is probably better suited to teenagers than youngsters.

It looks like our golden summer weather is over and it’s time to get those winter weekends sorted – we’d love to see you up the mountain.  As one of our chickens often says: book, book, book.

So, grab a season pass, pay your subs, book your bunks, and roll on the white stuff!

CSC Bunkum #4 2016 - Invoices and Bookings

1 April 2016

It’s almost time to kick off the 2016 season by sending out your subscription invoices and opening the booking system!

We will be continuing the rules introduced last year designed to encourage participation in official ski & board programs, increase the number of members that can stay at the lodge over the school holidays and improve the effectiveness of the booking system. To remind you of last year’s changes:

1.      A brief priority booking period will be given to those club members that have an intention for at least one of their immediate family members to participate in a ski/board mountain program run by RAL - or other providers - such as Flyers, Warriors, Master of the Mountain, Race camps, Holiday programs etc. Check out http://www.mtruapehu.com/winter/Whakapapa_Kids_Holiday_Programmes/ to see what is on offer by RAL for juniors during the school holidays.  They also have Flyers & Warriors weekend programs running, check out http://www.mtruapehu.com/winter/Whakapapa_Kids_Weekend_Programmes/ to see what’s on offer. To avail yourself of this advantage:

  1. Email me (membership@skichristie.co.nz) as soon as possible confirming who in your family will be participating in a 2016 program.
  2. Your family will be sent their invoice approx 2 days ahead of the rest of the members.
  3. You need to pay your invoice immediately – I will then give you your password to access the booking system.
  4. You can make your bookings as normal.

Please note, this isn’t about giving members on programs a constant booking advantage throughout the season – you only get a booking advantage for two (2) days – then the priority booking opportunity falls away. Obviously those who participate in the early booking and then don’t participate in a mountain program will be referred to the Committee.

2.      In both school holiday periods, bookings will be limited to blocks of 4 nights from the time bookings open in mid-April until May 7, a 3 week period.  After May 7 the restriction will be removed.  This will allow a greater number of families access to the lodge during these peak times (as long as members get “active” and book before May 7!). You must book for 4 nights – not more or LESS – you cannot just book for the weekend. The holiday periods will be:

July school holidays (the reference to dates below are the nights you will be staying):

  • Block 1: Friday 8 July to Monday 11 July (inclusive) - i.e. leave the lodge during the day on Tuesday 12 July

  • Block 2: Tuesday 12 July to Friday 15 July (inclusive) - i.e. leave the lodge during the day on Saturday 16 July

  • Block 3: Saturday 16 July to Tuesday 19 July (inclusive) - i.e. leave the lodge during the day on Wednesday 20 July

  • Block 4: Wednesday 20 July to Saturday 23 July (inclusive) - i.e. leave the lodge during the day on Sunday 24 July

Sept / Oct school holidays (again, the reference is to nights):

  • Block 1: Friday 23 September to Monday 26 September (inclusive) - i.e. leave the lodge during the day on Tuesday 27 September

  • Block 2: Tuesday 27 September to Friday 30 September (inclusive) - i.e. leave the lodge during the day on Saturday 1 October

  • Block 3: Saturday 1 October to Tuesday 4 October (inclusive) - i.e. leave the lodge during the day on Wednesday 5 October

  • Block 4: Wednesday 5 October to Saturday 8 October (inclusive) - i.e. leave the lodge during the day on Sunday 9 October

Note: members that are signing up to a mountain program (as set out in clause 1 above) can book for the period of their ski or board program – the 4 night restriction does not apply to them.

3.    When you are booking we ask that each stay of consecutive nights is made on a separate booking, i.e. has its own booking number. This will save enormous amounts of admin for our heroic bookings manager – Jenny Muir – if you want to change your booking.

Invoices for the 2016 season will be emailed to all members in the evening of Thursday April 14.  If your details have changed since last year, please let me know as soon as possible – the membership database needs to be as accurate as possible when invoices are generated, and queries on individual invoices may delay their processing – this could delay your access to the booking system.  Once payment has been received, you will be emailed your new access codes to the Booking System and the new Lodge door combination.

YOU NOW NEED TO DO YOUR PART AND START TO PLAN:

  • Are family members going to participate in a mountain program?

  • Do you want to be at the lodge for a part of the school holidays?

If so, start thinking about your dates NOW!

CSC Bunkum #3 2016 - we're Provisioned!

22 March 2016

30 plus enthusiastic and committed Christiania members and almost members made for a very productive Provisions Work Party last weekend.  In attendance were:

  • Seniors: Julie & Ken McKenzie, Steve & Lee Roper, Gary Verberne, Matt Holcroft, Mark Farrell, John Stephenson & Oliva Paul, Dylan Stephenson, Mitchell Studer, Bart van der Bijl, Tracey Jones & Ric Fisk, Simon Leadley, Lynne Keary, Paul & Caroline Weatherspoon

  • Juniors: Sean McKenzie, Samantha, Connor & Alex Roper, Elizabeth Verberne, Jack Taylor, Ben van der Bijl, Holly & Gina Fisk, Vinn Watts

We also had a few non-members getting stuck in -  Davis Watts and David Millington, with his daughters Hannah and Jamie.  Thanks guys – we hope we see more of you soon!

Pedro was there, making sure everything got put in the right place – he and Lee Roper made sure we were well refuelled at dinner and breakfast.

The lodge has a fresh coat of stain, done by lunchtime!  9m3 of firewood was transported by front end loader close to Vic Lodge then moved by hand and wheelbarrow to Christie where it was expertly stacked by Caroline Weatherspoon.  The freezers and pantry are full.  2 new stoves were delivered and installed, the old ones removed.  Paintwork was touched up, bathrooms were sealed.  Loose things were tightened, tight things were loosened.  Pictures are on our Facebook page.  Oh, did I mention that staining the entire lodge was done by lunchtime??

All this to the sound of a helicopter moving and pouring concrete into some very large holes – construction on the new express quad to Hutt Flat is well underway.

A big thanks to all who gave up their weekend to help out – it’s great to see such good spirit in the club.

Next Bunkum will include important season booking and invoicing details – stay tuned!

CSC Bunkum #2 2016 - Provisions weekend

9 March 2016

Your club needs you!  The 2016 pre-season “Provisions” work party is on Saturday - Sunday, March  19 - 20.  The lodge can accommodate another 10 people and we would welcome Saturday day trippers.

We need a full lodge for this one – PLEASE email Julie McKenzie at president@skichristie.co.nz ASAP if you can make it.

This work party is ideally suited for Junior members of all ages; we clean the pantry out, replenish it with the latest and greatest, stack a heap of fire wood, clean and paint. It would be great to see some of our newer families come and lend a hand and find out how the provisioning logistics work.  Plus it exempts you from the Work Party levy in your annual subs – a saving of $150 per senior member.

CSC Bunkum #1 2016 - Provisions weekend and general info

12 February 2016

The Christie committee had its first meeting of the year last week in preparation for the 2016 season.  We’re looking forward to a good one!

We would like to welcome Kirk Hannaford to the role of Deputy Club Captain, working alongside Bryan Clements.  Kirk is a long-time member of the club, he and his family are regular residents at the lodge.  Plus he’s a wicked skier!  Welcome aboard Kirk.

Important dates for the season have been set and are available in the club calendar.  The 2016 pre-season “Provisions” work party is set for Saturday & Sunday, March 19 & 20. If you can attend this work party, please contact Julie McKenzie at president@skichristie.co.nz

Invoicing for subs will occur in early April and, similar to last year, I will be contacting members by email to confirm details before sending invoices.  Access codes to the booking system will be sent out on receipt of payment.

We will continue with the booking restrictions that were put in place last year.  Full details will follow closer to the time but essentially:

  • A brief priority booking period will be given to members who have family participating in RAL’s ski or snowboard programs such as Flyers, Warriors, Master of the Mountain, Race camps, Holiday programs etc
  • School holiday bookings will be limited to predefined blocks of 4 nights only from the time bookings open until early May.  After this time the restriction will be removed.  This will allow a greater number of families access to the lodge during these peak times.

The lodge door code has changed!  The new code will be sent out along with access codes to the booking system in April.  If you need it before then, please contact president@skichristie.co.nz

Sadly the uptake on Snow Ball tickets has remained slow, with less than half the required presales sold so far.  It is highly likely that this event will now be cancelled and all monies refunded, to be confirmed next week.  If you are still interested in purchasing tickets and keeping this event alive, see my earlier communications here.

Christiania needs new members and our favourite new members are friends of current members.  If you have friends or associates that you think might like to join up, please direct them to our website.  There is currently no joining fee, usually $250 per family, but this will reinstated once we are at optimum membership numbers.  Tell your friends: “Join now and save money.  Come to the pre-season work party and save even more money!!”

Remember – if you’re looking for old Bunkums and club news, you can find them on our website, here.

2016 Christiania Snow Ball - IMPORTANT!

2 February 2016

I’m afraid interest in the 2016 Christiania Snowball has been very slow so far and we are at serious risk of having to cancel this event.  We need to sell another 40 double tickets before February 15 or we cannot proceed.  If you are interested in attending, it’s important that you buy your tickets now.

If we have not sold the required number of tickets by February 15, the ball will be cancelled and all monies refunded.

The Early Bird offer that puts you in the draw for the $1000-a-night Te Heu Heu Suite has also been extended until February 15.

In case you’ve forgotten, $480 a double ticket gets you:

  • Accommodation in a double/twin room at the Chateau Tongariro
  • Entry for 2 to the Snow Ball, where you will enjoy:

Glass of bubbles on arrival plus 2 bottles of wine per table

Full 3 course meal

2016 Christiania Snow Ball

19 January 2016

Happy New Year!  Now that the Christmas madness is over I hope you can give some thought to some mid-year madness, the 2016 Christiania Snowball!  Ticket sales have been slow so far and we need to reach a critical mass by mid-February or the event cannot proceed.

The 2014 60th Anniversary Snowball was a blast – don’t miss out on this year’s – gather a group of friends or family and join the fun.  But you need act soon – buy your tickets now to secure your place and ensure the event proceeds as planned.

I have attached a booking form and flyer – more information and booking details are available on the Christiania web site, here

Any queries, please contact Jo at secretary@skichristie.co.nz
