Derby

Our annual interclub racing event will be held on Saturday 6 September 2025, with Sunday 7 September as the contingency day.

This year we have joined forces with Rangatira Alpine Sports Club. Both the Rangatira Trophy (for the fastest club on the mountain) and the traditional Christiania Derby Team Shields will be on offer, as well as individual awards.

Open to all members of the 50-odd ski clubs on Ruapehu. In previous years these events attracted around 130 racers: juniors, male, female, masters - skiers and snowboarders.  Race as individual and/or part of a team. The event is competitive, but focused on amateur skiing and fun, with a prizegiving party to conclude a great day on the mountain.

2025 Event Schedule and Registration

Friday 5 September:
7 - 9pm: Bib collection at Rangatira (pre-paid registrations only)

Saturday 6 September:
8.30am: Deadline late registrations (online) and payments
9am: Late sign-in & bib collection at Knoll Ridge Cafe
10am: Racing starts, usually at top of Valley T
6:30pm: Prize giving (location TBC)

All entries are to be done online

To enter, complete the Registration Form online and pay before 6 Sep 8.30am
by bank transfer to Christiania Ski Club: 03-0318-0286109-00.
Your registration will only be confirmed once (proof of) payment is received.

Bib collection
After online registration and payment is done, a representative from each club must collect bibs for their racers from Rangatira Alpine Sports Club on Friday evening. Please email clubcaptain@rangatiraskiclub.co.nz if there is an issue with bib collection. Bibs are to be returned by racers at the end of their last run, to the bib collector at the bottom of the course.

Entry fee and Categories

Fee: $140 per team of four, or $40 per individual.
Juniors U16: $100 per team of four, or $30 per individual.
The fee includes racing and the prizegiving party.
Pre-registration and early payments are warmly encouraged.

Every racer must be entered into one of 4 categories, and provide their gender and age.
All racers will race individually, with the option to race within a team of 3 or 4.

  • Open: Anyone (all ages)

  • Masters: Aged 40 or over (as at 1 January 2025)

  • Juniors: Aged 16 or under (as at 1 January 2025)

  • Snowboard: Male or Female (all ages)

Prize giving party
We promote responsible alcohol consumption and will provide food and non-alcoholic beverages. We will not serve alcohol to under 18 yr olds (those under 25 are recommended to bring ID). Three (3) free drinks are included with each entry ticket.
Any person under 18 years of age must be accompanied by someone over 21 years who is responsible for them the entire evening.

AWARDS:

Individual awards shall be presented to:

  • Fastest junior skier overall

  • Fastest junior female

  • Fastest master overall

  • Fastest master female

  • Fastest female skier (open)

  • Fastest male skier (open)

  • Fastest female snowboarder (Christiania Shield)

  • Fastest male snowboarder  (Christiania Shield)

 Team Awards (Christiania Shields) shall be presented to:

  • Fastest junior team (minimal 1 female time counted)

  • Fastest master team (minimal 1 female time counted)

  • Fastest male team (open)

  • Fastest female team (open)

The Rangatira Trophy for Fastest Club shall be presented to the fastest club, determined by the aggregate of the five fastest times from members within the same club.
These times must include: One Junior, One Master, One Male, One Female, and one additional time of any category to make five (no duplicate counting).
This is based on age, not the category raced in. Each person can only be counted once (e.g., if you are the fastest Female, you cannot also be counted as the fastest Junior or Master).

SUMMARY OF RACING RULES:

  • All racers must be fully paid club members of their respective clubs

  • All racers must wear a helmet and bib

  • All are to follow instructions from course controllers and RAL Snow Code

  • Race Order is generally by bib number. Juniors first, followed by Masters, Ladies, Men, and Snowboarders

  • No hiking on the course

  • Miss a gate = disqualification, stop or fall = continue down

  • Clear the finish area quickly and return bibs directly after finishing race

Team Racing rules:

  • All team members must be members form the same ski club

  • All team members must be from a single category

  • Teams consist of max. 4 people and min. 3 people

  • Fastest 3 count towards overall team time

  • Skiers can only race for one team only

  • More than one team can be entered from each club in each category

  • Junior and Master teams: minimal 1 female's time must be included within the aggregated team time
