CSC Bunkum #1 2025 - Membership drive, invoicing, work party, events, Life Pass Holders

May 2, 2025

A record for possibly the latest Bunkum # 1 ever produced - my apologies!  We haven't been idle however, the club committee has already met a number of times and planning for this year is well underway.  The good news is that, confirmed yesterday, Whakapapa Holdings Limited will be the new operator of  Whakapapa, having been granted a 10 year concession by DoC.  We have some certainty at last - now it's full steam ahead for us!

We're looking for new members!  It can't be denied - the last few years have been difficult. Covid, uncertainty on the mountain, and some less than spectacular snow cover, has had its effect on the club membership.  We need new members to keep the club viable in the future. Our best advertisers are current and past members - please tell your friends about the best club on the mountain!

We've made some changes to our membership and accommodation rates this year that will appeal to families with young children - kids under 10 pay no subscription fee, and kids under 8 stay for free!  So please spread the word - info on joining, along with a link to our application form, can be found here.

Subscription invoices will be sent out over the next few weeks. Please let me know asap if your, or your family's membership details have changed. Are your juniors still juniors? Do you have family members that are in tertiary education and could benefit from Tertiary membership? Are last year's Tertiary members still eligible? Maybe you're eligible for Veteran status? (60 or over with 15+ years affiliation with the club)  It saves a lot of time if this info is processed before invoices are generated.

As per previous years, access to the booking system becomes active once you've paid your subs in full.  Please be aware that you are able to pay your subs by instalment if you wish.  No special arrangements need to be made, simply pay what you can, when you can - once you have reached the full amount your access will be activated.

The Booking System will be unavailable while invoices are being generated, and will open again in early June to members who have paid their 2025 subs.  If you are planning an out-of-season stay at the lodge in the next couple of months, please contact Jenny, our Bookings Officer directly on bookings@skichristie.co.nz

The pre season Cleanup Work Party will be held on the weekend of June 28-29. This is where we give the lodge a comprehensive top to bottom clean and prepare for winter. Juniors are welcome. Remember, work party attendance exempts you from the Work Party levy in your annual subs – a saving of $200 per Senior member.  If you're interested, please let me know - membership@skichristie.co.nz

Our annual interclub race, The Christiania Derby, will be run a little differently this year.  We're joining with Rangatira Alpine Sports Club to run a combined Christiania Derby and Rangatira Alpine Trophy event, with the after match function to be held at Rangatira.  Details are still being finalised but the date has been confirmed - September 6

Organise a group event at Christie!  Last year we had a couple of very successful mid-week work group stays organised by club members - so successful they're coming back this year!  Treat a group of friends or workmates to a memorable few days in the snow - rates can be negotiated - contact Jenny at bookings@skichristie.co.nz

Lastly, a message to Life Pass Holders:

Are you a holder of Life Pass that you no longer wish to use?

As you know, with the demise of RAL, our old life passes are now virtually worthless. We won’t debate here the circumstances leading to that but rather focus on an opportunity that has arisen.

Season passes are about to go on sale and WHL, the successor to RAL, are offering a discounted 3 year season pass to RAL Life Pass Holders. The 2025 Winter Season Passes webpage says: "As we look forward with a focus on regeneration and to a new and improved Whakapapa, we also look back and acknowledge all of those who have contributed to Whakapapa as it stands today.  The Three-Year Pass is an offer dedicated to RAL Life Passholders or their nominee."  Total cost is $999 for 3 years, or a split payment of $499.50 for first two years.

We have already heard from existing members who will not take up the season pass discount and have offered the club their life passes so that other members can take up the offer. The committee supports this as an excellent idea for clubbies to get some continued value from what otherwise now has none.
The committee does not wish to broker these exchanges, instead we're directing past and present members to the Christie Clubbies: Buy, Sell & Free Facebook group.  You'll need an active Facebook account.  Click the Join Group button, accept the T&Cs and, once your request has been approved, you'll be able to create an post letting other group members know your passes are available.

If you have any problems with this process please let me know - membership@skichristie.co.nz

CSC Bunkum #2 2025 - Season passes, development programmes, work party, lockers

June 5, 2025

It's June, the temperature is starting to drop and things are starting to look busy at Whakapapa as we approach the start of the 2025 season.

A reminder that WHL's season pass sale ends this Sunday, June 8.  I've just found out that "members of any RMCA club (this includes Christiania) can access our best price by entering the code CLUBFREEZE at checkout – this is the price available to purchasers that have had a season pass with Whakapapa in the last five years, but for club members it works even if they didn’t have a pass previously!"
Also note that season passes are free for kids 10 and under.
And, as noted in Bunkum #1, members who had a life pass with RAL can access a special three year deal for $999, with half due now, half in 2026 and nothing in 2027. Or, they can transfer this opportunity to the next generation, a family member or friend.

WHL have released information on their 2025 Development programmes: "Expert instructors, a supportive environment, and a whānau feel. Our development programmes are a step up in commitment, on a path to becoming a more competent or expert skier or snowboarder. Programmes run at Whakapapa, and are tailored to the needs of both junior and adult riders."  A downloadable file containing all the programme options is available here.

The booking system will open in the week of June 16 to all members who have paid their subs - if you haven't paid, you can't make a booking!  If by chance you haven't received your subs invoice, please let me know asap - membership@skichristie.co.nz

We're still looking for more people for the pre season Cleanup Work Party, to be held on the weekend of June 28-29, the first weekend of the school holidays. Work party attendance exempts you from the Work Party levy in your annual subs – a saving of $200 per Senior member. (this will be refunded if you've already paid your subs)  If interested in attending, please let me know.

We have a couple of lockers and a few ski racks available at the moment, $90 and $50 respectively for the season.  There's normally a long waiting list for lockers, so, if you're interested, let me know asap - they won't last long.

Dates have been set for Men's Few Days - Monday & Tuesday August 18 & 19. Dates for Ladies Few Days are still to be confirmed.

Don't forget about the Christie Clubbies: Buy, Sell & Free Facebook group.

And you can see all 2025 Bunkums here.

CSC Bunkum #3 2025 - Booking system is open, lodge will be soon, events...

June 19, 2025

The season is upon us.  Happy Valley opens tomorrow and snowmaking is in full swing further up the mountain.  According to Whakapapa Events the lower mountain lifts are projected to open on June 27, and upper mountain a week later.  Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

The Lodge booking system is now open to all members who have paid their subs.  There are no booking restrictions this year - so fill your boots! Remember, if you haven't paid your subs, you can't book.
If you're making a booking, please ensure you're familiar with what information needs to be entered in your booking details – names of people staying, ages of your juniors, estimated arrival time etc. This is very important information for our Booking Officer, Custodians and Party Leader.

Pedro & Dallas, our beloved custodians, will be in residence from June 28 - just in time for the school holidays.  Welcome back guys, looking forward to catching up!

We've had a great response to the pre season Cleanup Work Party, but there's still room for more people to help get the lodge in tip top shape for the season.  Remember - attending the work party saves you $200 on your subs. Please let me know if you're interested - membership@skichristie.co.nz.  For those of you who've already signed up, there will be more comms early next week.

A few club and mountain event dates to be aware of:

Mid-winter Christmas is penciled in for July 26 - always a good time to be at the lodge - a feast is had, with lots of fun and games.  Will there be an appearance by a big guy in a red suit?  I'll confirm this date in the next bunkum.

Men's Few Days - Monday & Tuesday August 18 & 19.  Ladies Few Days - still to be confirmed.

The Christiania Derby will be combined with the Rangatira Trophy race this year, running on September 6.  Derby's a fun day to be at the lodge and on the mountain - entry is free for club members - we encourage participation, and you don't have to be competitive to have a good time.  The after match function and prizegiving will be held at Rangatira this year.

Juniors Weekend runs on September 13 and 14.  This is a great weekend for our juniors to get out together on the mountain, with great guidance.  The fun continues indoors at the end of the day.  A very popular weekend with Christie families - book now to avoid disappointment!

We have some new club members:

  • Carl Hemmingson and Aimee Waterhouse from Hamilton

  • The Hendry family from Auckland - Monica, Campbell, Edison, William and Isla

  • The Garrett family from Auckland - Mia, Simon, Zac, Vada and Fraser

Welcome aboard guys - we look forward to meeting you soon!

Don't forget about the Christie Clubbies: Buy, Sell & Free Facebook group.

CSC Bunkum #4 2025 - we ARE skiing! Derby, Ladies Few Days, Juniors Weekend, a sad note ...

August 23, 2025

Apologies for the gap between bunkums!  We're well into the season and, while we haven't had record snowfall, the additional snowmakers installed by WHL this year have made a big difference. Our members are reporting lovely skiing on main trails, particularly in the morning.  I read this is the Ruapehu Mountain Club Association newsletter this week:

" ... a huge thank you to WHL for the mahi with the snow making on the mountain. The work from their team has been phenomenal this season. We are loving the top to bottom skiing. The sunset laps on the Rangatira last Saturday were amazing..."

In 2 weeks time, on September 6, we are running the combined Christiania Derby and Rangatira Trophy event.  Normally run on separate days we're joining forces this year - the traditional Derby Team shields will be up for grabs as well as individual awards, and the Rangatira Trophy for the fastest club. The event is competitive, but focused on amateur skiing and fun, with a prizegiving party (venue tbc, but not at our lodge) to conclude a great day on the mountain. More info is available here, and remember, the club will cover your entry fee if you're a member.  We have a Facebook event for Derby.

We have Ladies Few Days coming up on September 8 & 9 - a great way for the fairer members of of our club to enjoy a couple of days on the mountain without spouses, children and other such annoyances. (Warning - Pedro will still be there!) We have a great offer this year: bring some non-member friends and they can stay at member rates - a great way to introduce friends to the club, or give your besties a fantastic mountain experience.  To take advantage of this offer, simply book your guests in on your normal member booking, but please note that they're non-members in the "Names of attendees" section of the booking form.

Then we have Juniors' Weekend on September 13 & 14. The aim of this weekend is to help improve our junior members’ skiing, and for them to have fun with their friends and families. We will have 2 or 3 of our more skilled members to teach and entertain on the slopes, with fun and games in the evening. The more children the better!  These weekends a lot of fun and very popular - bunks go fast!  We have a Facebook event for Juniors Weekend.

A small housekeeping note - we could do with some old newspaper for lighting the fire - newsprint NOT glossy.  If you're heading to the lodge and have any old newspapers please bring them up.

A sad note to finish - thanks to Mark Farrell for this tribute to Liz Agnew, an important part of early Chriatiania:

It is with sadness that we advise the passing of Christiania stalwart, Liz Agnew.

Liz was a prominent member of the club, including services to Christie such as Christiania Bulletin typist in the late 70s and Club Captain between 1984 - 1985. She became a Life Member in 1995.

Liz was brought up on Whakapapa's doorstep with her parents both working at The Chateau. She began winning ski racing trophies at the age of 11, competed in the New Zealand open women's from around 1961 and achieved open women's podiums from 1963. She was first in the Open Women's GS in 1964 and 1966 and was a New Zealand representative, competing in Australia.

In the late 80s she became a Trustee of the Whakapapa Ski Foundation, helping to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars towards ski racers to further their sport. She remained a trustee up until the time of her death, continuing to provide advice and helping with decision making.

She is survived by her husband Norm (Club  President 1987 - 1990 and life member 1995), their children Michelle and Paul, and their families.

Our thoughts go to Liz's family.

CSC Bunkum #5 2025 - SNOW!

September 16, 2025

A quick bunkum in case you don't know - snow has fallen, bigtime! The West Ridge Chair has been running and all we're waiting for now is the Far West T-Bar.  I received this message from Kerry Jones: "All I have to say is that it took us over an hour to dig the car out yesterday with 3 teenagers and 2 spades ... they had that much snow.  The school holidays are going to be epic!"

And speaking of the school holidays, there's lots of space at the lodge throughout - it's unheard of!  I'd be getting in quick before all the beds are snapped up ...

The official combined Christiania Derby and Rangatira Trophy race, due to have run on Sept 6, was unfortunately cancelled due to high winds.  However a simple short track was set on the Saturday afternoon where Zoe Jones won the Junior Female division - congratulations Zoe!

There was a small group in the Lodge for Ladies Few Days on September 7 & 8 - check out Vivian Oskam's pictures on the club Facebook page - "Incredibly Lucky Ladies Few Days!! Two gorgeous bluebird days after a massive dump. Enjoying fresh snow, ski-in/ski-out, fantastic 3-course meals, great company and no queues at the lifts… This is the time to sneak in a midweek escape!"

A late season maybe, but it's looking like it's going to end very well.  All we need is you!
